Slocum watched as the six riders turned around and headed back toward Whizbang. He knew that he’d lost them. He also figured they thought that he would die of his wound anyhow and therefore wasn’t worth searching for. Well, by God, he’d show them. He’d surprise the hell out of them. He would, that is, if he could keep himself from passing out. He was feeling light-headed and a little dizzy. He knew that he had lost blood, a lot of blood. He did not know if he was still bleeding. A man could bleed to death from just a little wound if he had no way of stopping the flow of blood. He tried to think of something he could do.

He reached around behind his back searching for the bullet hole, and he winced with pain when he found it. At least he knew he could reach it. The question then was what to do about it. He waited until the riders were well on their way. Then he rode back down into the valley. The hillsides on each side of the valley were lined with thick woods. Slocum rode along the edge of the woods looking at the crotches of trees until he spotted one that was filled with spiderweb.

He rode over to the tree and grabbed a handful of the thick web. A huge yellow spider with black spots ran from the disturbance. Slocum looked at the stuff in his hand to make sure there were no live creatures or fly bodies in it. It looked fairly clean. He reached back around his back again and found the bullet hole. Then he jammed the web into and around the hole. It might help.
